Rules

In order to participate in studies at the Behavioural Business Lab (BBL), you must register in our database using the lab's online recruitment system. Part of this registration process involves acknowledging the following basic rules of conduct:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to take part in BBL studies. Please only register if you meet this requirement.
  • You can only register once in the database. Registering multiple accounts undermines scientific research. Any participant found with more than one profile will be excluded from all future studies.
  • A certain number of registered people will receive an invitation email to each study. The exact number is determined by the researcher conducting that study. Only the invited people may take part in that study.
  • If you receive an invitation email, you must respond affirmatively in order to participate. Spaces in a study are limited, so it is important to respond early to better ensure that a space will still be available. Important Note: Once you respond affirmatively, you cannot later withdraw this response from the recruitment system, so please verify that you are actually able to come before you respond.
  • Sometimes some extra people are invited to ensure that a minimum participation level is achieved. Extra people may receive compensation for arriving for the study on time. The exact amount of this payment is determined by the researcher conducting that particular study, and will be described in the invitation email.
  • Participants may be compensated based on the decisions they make during the study. The exact amount of this payment is determined by the researcher conducting that particular study, and will be described during the study.
  • Important Note: After the scheduled start time, anyone who responded affirmatively to an invitation but did not show up on time will not receive any compensation for that study. In addition, he or she will be marked as a no-show for the session. After a person receives 4 no-shows, he or she will be permanently removed from the database, and will be ineligible for any further studies.
  • During a study, participants must follow the directions of the researchers. The researchers will identify themselves before the commencement of the study.
Privacy Statement

RMIT University values privacy and is committed to handling personal, sensitive and health information in accordance with the RMIT Privacy and Data Protection Policy and the privacy principles contained in the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) and the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic).

The Behavioural Business Lab's (BBL) research-ethics responsibilities include the proper safeguarding of potentially sensitive data collected during a study. BBL takes the following steps to meet its confidentiality requirements:

  • All data collected during recruitment is stored on a server that is accessible only to BBL research staff. This data is stored internally on the RMIT server. The data is used only for the purpose of recruiting people to participate in BBL studies.
  • All personally-identifying data collected during a study (e.g., your name) is processed according to the approved ethics document of the respective study. Usually, any personal information is replaced with a code number, and the list linking code numbers to personally-identifying data is kept separate from the study data.
  • All human-subjects forms containing personally-identifying information (e.g., informed consent) are stored in secure locations.
  • You may remove yourself from our database or update your details at any time by emailing us at behavioural.business.lab@rmit.edu.au
